me "we never give up." and while it seems now the search on tuesday did not find kevin collins. it did reignite the cold case. we have learned police interviewed a person of interest back in 1984. who lived at the house where the search took place on tuesday. at the time, that man allowed police to search his home on masonic ave. that man was never arrested and has since passed away. here is more from the chief: >> "in going over the cold case the inspectors developed some new information they did more investigation, there is more investigation that needs to be done but it was enough in concert with the fbi to get a search warrant to go back there we have better tech now the cadaver dogs went through there. they did both hit on a location it appears the hit that they hit on are the bones of an animal but the me is still going through that." >> reporter: the chief would not elaborate on what prompted investigators to get that search warrant.

>> pam: a developing story. crime soaring in east oakland. kron 4's haaziq madyun spent the bottom of what's fueling the spike in crime. >> reporter: robberies on the rise in east oakland in the fruitvalle district. tracking this trend in the oakland police department is using a crime and statistics technology. >> there will confront an individual and if they're going to their car to the house. or if the individuals are going down the street and not paying attention. on their smart phone. >> these typical items would be gold chains, cash, computer equipment. >> it has been mainly hispanics that had been the victims. these hot spots you could be at the right spot

at the right time trying to catch the crime in action. >> reporter: haazig madyun kron 4. >> pam: year to date there have been 131. one year later, it has been 150. during the same. . >> pam: right now -- a san jose family, living in fear. they've been terrorized by vandalism and then arson on two nights straight. kron four's rob fladeboe talked the victims today -- who say they can't understand why they're being targeted. >> this arson is much more serious. we are aware of what is going on the home could have burned down. >> reporter: outside their willow glen home, insisting on anonymity for he and his daughter, the owner spoke of their rude awakening early wednesday as their house was deliberately set on fire.

>> there were flames coming from the front door it was scorched. the floor mat was burning there seemed to be some type of liquid, kerosene. >> reporter: grabbing a garden hose, the owner doused the fire confining damage to the wooden front door and some nearby plumbing and electrical fixtures. less than 24 hours earlier, somebody slashed the tires and threw yellow paint on a car owned by the victim's daughter. there's yellow paint all over the street too. >> i have no idea who would want to do something like this. this is one of the safest neighborhoods will certainly not had an incident like this before. >> reporter: friends and families are stopping to offer their help and their eyes and ears going forward. they are installing a video

(male announcer) this is the bay area news station, kron 4 news starts now. >> today was the first congressional hearing on gun control since the connecticut school shooting. and it began with a plea from former congresswoman gabrielle giffords. catherine heenan is here >> catherine: gabrielle giffords - who was shot in the hear 2 years ago - felt she had to make an appearance on behalf of gun control. it wasn't easy for her.but testimony which began today's hearing. giffords friends say it took hours of practice for her to get ready for her statement. since being injured in a mass shooting in arizona in 2011.she has trouble walking and speaking. but it was her testimony that many people wanted to hear. her husband mark kelly would later say that if there had been tougher background checks. his wife might have been spared. or if there had been >> there are too many children that are dying we must do something! >> catherine: a limit on the size of ammunition magazines.the shooting that wounded her might have been more limited.

also testifying today. the head of the national rifle association. he didn't give much ground.saying he does 'not' support the expansion of backgroundchecks for gun sales. you miss the point completely i think that it is basic. >> i think you have missed the point. >> catherine: senator dick durbin of illinois also passed on the sad news of one of the latest victims of gun violence in chicago. a 15 year-old honors student named hadiya pendleton. killed tuesday in a park minutes after taking a final exam at school. just last week hadiya performed with her high school band at president obama's inaugural. the tragedy comes days after the president - whose home is only a mile from the shooting scene - announced plans to ban assault weapons as part of an overhaul of gun laws.

been damaged. and a local manufacturing plant has been destroyed. another hard hit area -- tennessee. this nashville man was killed when a large tree crashed onto his home. he's one of at least two people killed -- the other victim is from georgia. tennessee is under a state of emergency tonight after severe storms passed through last night and this morning. many buildings were flattened and trees and power lines are down. in texas, mississippi alabama and indiana. this steeple was torn from a church in alabama. farthe pastor says he's just grateful no one was inside at the time. it's just one of many buildings damaged in the area. and this is some of the damage in indiana.where barns, homes and stores were

>> new information tonight at 6. in the search for kevin collins, the 10-year- old boy that went missing in san ago. kron 4's justine waldman has been following this story since it broke.and spoke with investigators a short time ago. she joins us in the studio now with the latest from police. justine? >> reporter: i spoke with san francisco's police chief today. about the search. he told me investigators started to go over the cold- case again and found something that caught their attention. and that is what brought them back to this house on masonic avenue. a home that investigators searched when 19-84. what *exactly that tip or clue is. is still part of >> "regoing over the file now they determined they have probable cause to seek the search warrant now none of these cases are ever over tech keeps getting better and better investigative tech keep improving and from a guy who searched more places and under more things >> reporter: we are waiting for testing to be finished on the animal bones that investigators found. just to make sure it is not kevin. i also just talked with. the lead investigator who handled the case when it broke in 1984. he told me he remembered that everyone was a suspect. when the time kevin disappeared. and that during his search he uncovered tunnels under
